Traces of Intellectual Working Memory Tasks on Visuospatial Short-Term Memory
نویسندگان
چکیده
We measured the sensitivity in detecting a change in the location of one of two visual targets over a short period of time to investigate the impact of a secondary intellectual symbolic WM task on the visuospatial short-term memory, in a dual-task paradigm. We observed that engaging in a WM task that involves manipulation of symbolic information impacts the ability to detect a location change, and this impact does not change when more time is allocated to the WM task. Furthermore, we observed that the impact of a mental sorting task on the ability to detect location changes is spatially selective to the horizontal orientation. Our results suggest a possible role for sensory-motor working memory, which supports perceptionaction schemas in manipulation of information during the intellectual symbolic working memory tasks.

متن کاملThe effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on collocation processing in learners of English
Much interest has recently been directed toward the knowledge of collocations in the field of second language learning since they have been asserted to improve fluency. The current study was intended to examine the effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on the processing of collocations using a Self-Pace Reading Task (SPRT) and relevant working memory tasks. To this end, partici...
متن کاملThe Effect of Dual Task Interference on Gait in Aging: Role of Working Memory Components
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of concurrent cognitive tasks activating phonological loop and visuospatial scratchpad of working memory on gait in older adults.12 older adults with the age range of 65-70 years performed walking trials in 3 counterbalanced testing conditions including single walking, walking while performing visuospatial task and walking while per...
متن کاملContribution of underlying processes to improved visuospatial working memory associated with physical activity
BACKGROUND Working memory is critical for various cognitive processes and can be separated into two stages: short-term memory storage and manipulation processing. Although previous studies have demonstrated that increased physical activity (PA) improves working memory and that males outperform females on visuospatial working memory tasks, few studies have determined the contribution of the two ...
متن کاملVerbal and visuospatial short-term and working memory in children: are they separable?
This study explored the structure of verbal and visuospatial short-term and working memory in children between ages 4 and 11 years. Multiple tasks measuring 4 different memory components were used to capture the cognitive processes underlying working memory. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the processing component of working memory tasks was supported by a common resource pool, whil...
